Frequently Asked Questions

Is your Alfalfa grown using Non-GMO seed?

Yes, our alfalfa variety is Non-GMO. We use a Variety of seed that has been planted in our area for over 100 years.

What kind of nutrients or fertilizers do you use?

Our main source of nutrients comes from organic chicken manure. We also plant other grass and let them grow to about 12-18 inches tall and plow that back into the ground. These practices give organic nutrients to the plant but also really help the health of the soil in the future.  Chicken Manure is one of our favorite forms of fertilizers to put on any crop Alfalfa, corn, and wheat. It does a great job.

What about the use of insecticides?

We do not use any insecticides. One of the greatest benefits of growing high quality hay for your small pets is that we cut more frequent to increase nutrient value in the feed. To achieve this high quality hay we have to cut it more frequent and not let it get as old. The bugs (aphids, mites) that can be found in hay usually appear in the later stages of growth in the hay. So by cutting hay more often we do not get the bugs in our hay fields as much.

Do you use Herbicides?

We do use herbicides in the winter that prevents the weeds from growing in the spring and summer. By doing this it allows for our hay to be cleaner, but also makes it so we do not have to spray an herbicides on the Alfalfa when it is growing in the spring and throughout the summer.

What would you feed your small pets?

Alfalfa is really good for your small pets that are growing, nursing, or recovering from surgery or illness. Alfalfa has a lot of protein and nutrients that really help in the development of young pets.Orchard grass would be for mature healthy pets that are just needing to maintain a healthy weight and life style. It doesn’t have the protein or nutrients that alfalfa has.Chickens- alfalfa can be a very good source of fiber and protein for your chickens. I would highly recommend trying it as a supplement to your normal chicken feed.

Larger order size?

We have had several orders for larger quantities of feed. We are currently in the process of trying to find a box that we can ship 20 or 40 lbs in to help fulfill the request for larger shipments.

How do we get fresh hay in the winter?

Hay/Alfalfa can stay very fresh all winter long if store properly. So throughout the summer we will always ship out our most fresh product and then as winter comes we will start shipping our hay that we have stored and kept as fresh as possible.
